Land Circle: Writings Collected from the Land
Published in Hardcover by Fulcrum Pub (November, 1991)
Author: Linda M. Hasselstrom
Average review score:

Part poetry, part essays, all wonderful
While not a new book, this one is worthy of the readers time. Hasselstrom is a poet, an essayist and a working ranch woman, dividing her time between her ranch in South Dakota and a residence in Wyoming. This book is part poetry and part essay. It is all exceptional. If you want to read of death, life, love, the land and being a woman by one of the best writers in the business, this is the book for you. She has written a number of fine poetry books but I recommend this collection as a start. From here I suspect the reader will go on to her other works. She's that good.

An exciting read from cover to cover!
I am a 8th grade English teacher. I saw the review for this novel in The Horn Book. It was excellent! The plot is straight forward and the tension in the story does not let up until the last page. It is a good book to develop questions and ethical debates with your students. "What would you do" will be in your head as you read the entire book. Questions as to Clay O'Brien's true character will also come up. You also have to decide if Mary Kathleen O'Brien description of her husband is accurate. It is a good "thinking book. The book is a quick read with only 184 pages. The print is medium size as well. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a bit of suspense thrown in!

A Wonderful Way To Travel
The Roadside History of South Dakota is an entertaining, well-written book. At first I read this book as an armchair traveler and enjoyed anecdotes that gave the flavor and essence of South Dakota. Then I drove through the state. The book brought to life the places we passed on the way, and I was able to entertain my children with stories of the people who lived there. Driving roads like I90 became a historical and cultural experience. I am looking forward to reading other books in the Roadside History series.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota : a pictorial history

Fascinating book about the past of Sioux Falls, South Dakota
I moved to Sioux Falls in May, 1994 and had no idea of the fascinating history of the city and surrounding area.

I came across this book at the library, and started reading it and looking through the pictures. I was surprised at the amount of material that was in this book, and it made for a thoroughly involving trip down yesteryear, looking at the old pictures and trying to match them up with what is now present.

I also came to realize what beautiful architecture much of Sioux Falls used to have, and I've come to bemoan in part what has happened to most of the downtown area. I would never have known the architectual heritage that Sioux Falls lost had I not seen this book. It also has made me thankful for the precious little bits that survive today.

It's a pity that this book went out of print. It is probably the single best book that ever was, and likely ever will be, for a history of Sioux Falls.

My City
I adored this book, because I left Sioux Falls, my birthplace, when I was only one and a half. When I read this book, I learned so much about where I was from and it helped me choose where I am going to visit when I go with my family on a trip all over South Dakota! This book is for all South Dakotans!

South Dakota Atlas & Gazetteer

Can't get lost with this!
I've used Delorme atlases without any problem on my excursions through other states, so I bought the South Dakota atlas last summer before my trip last September. As usual, everything in the atlas is clear and easy to read. My trip took me all across the state of South Dakota, including travel on many back roads. Not once did I wonder where I was or feel I was lost. These atlases are remarkable for their accuracy, and they have another winner with this one. Whether you've visiting the Black Hills, heading to Pierre, or want to get to Watertown, you can use any road confidently with this atlas. Highly recommended if you want to see any part of the state off I-90 or I-29!

Sturgis Stories: Celebrating the People of the World's Largest Motorcycle Rally
Published in Paperback by Kirk House Pub (01 March, 2002)
Author: Thomas G. Endres
Average review score:

An inspiring, eye opening book.
This is a cool book. The author captures through pictures and words what it means to participate in the Sturgis Rally. Through more than 25 stories, the author introduces the reader to the many folks drawn to Sturgis; to the diversity of the rally goers; to their bikes; to the stories they share; and to the freedom that brings them together.

Through each story I learned a bit more about what leads people, from all walks of life, to gather and celebrate true freedom. The book includes stories from people with names like Mad Max, Papa Smurf, Boodan and Joker but also tells the story more average riders like Ron and Sharon. I like the way the stories drew me into the life of each rider, the way it included young and old, men and women, and all variety of bikes.

The book is as engaging to look at as it is to read. I gave a copy of the book as a gift to my Harley friend and he loved it.

My son loved this book!
My 8-year-old son is a machine maniac, and he loved his story of a boy in 1912 helping to harvest wheat in North Dakota by learning to run a steam engine. Lots of info and great drawings of the steam tractor and thresher, plus fanscinating details about life on the prairie. Mom enjoyed it too, and often had a tear in her eye.
